We Have Arrived

“The three furniture lorries arrive from the South a good ten days after we do. … Their journey is fraught with difficulties, the first of which is that the vehicles are too high to fit onto the new ferry with a roof. … They drive around to the smaller open ferry, a distance of 80 miles, and find that they are too long for it. … By now the drivers are too tired to care. Three days later they bump up the drive, white-faced and wide-eyed, as if they had just landed on the moon.” Thankfully our experience was the very opposite of Judy Fairbairns who recounts her story in ‘Island Wife’.
On the Thursday morning, we arrived at the ferry terminal to find our furniture lorry already in the queue for Tiree. The sun was up, but the early morning haze gave it an almost surreal feeling. The crossing was calm and the sun shone. Arrival at Tiree was more or less on time and with help from Andrew, plus Alan’s brother and his wife, who had made the crossing along with us, the van was unloaded in good time. Our friendly lorry driver was then able to complete his cycle-navigation of the island, covering over 60 kilometres, before boarding the ferry for his return to Taunton.
We are more or less unpacked and already our new abode is beginning to feel like home. We appreciate all the help we received from Alan’s brother and his wife, who headed back to the mainland on the Saturday. Andrew returned to the mainland on the Thursday, flying from Tiree to Glasgow and then on to Birmingham, then completing his journey by rail.
Life on Tree means that we have been to church, gone to home-group and prayer meeting, registered with the doctors’ surgery and the dentist. Gradually we are getting to know folks. And – wait for it – today we went on broadband thanks to a most helpful person at BT.
What a thrill it is to look out our window and see the sea, to watch the ferry come and go, and to live on island with only the sound of sheep and birds, of the wind and the waves as background noise.
