Wakening to Bright Sunshine

An Talla, Community Hall

Wakening to bright sunshine, we have breakfast earlier than might be normal for a Sunday morning. Our guests who have travelled all the way from Wiveliscombe in Somerset, where we used to live, are staying with us for the week. Together we set out for An Talla, the Community Hall at Crossapol. On the way we pass the Old Harbour at Scarinish and the attractive dingy ‘Pelican” moored at Baugh. The bay at Crossapol is breath taking with its white sand and sparkling azure water. Our guests are impressed.

Today, Jim Parrett from Bearsden is the guest preacher at the Baptist Church, which meets in An Talla. Jim also welcomes and commissions Alan as the minister of the church. It is a very special time for the church and for us. At the conclusion of the service we are joined for lunch by members of the Church of Scotland and greetings from various friends and the Baptist Union are shared. A birthday cake appears and happy birthday is sung to the church secretary. Here on Tiree they certainly know how to do lunch! We come away so encouraged.

On a day like this, we cannot stay in, so after our guests catch their breath, we walk along the beach at Gott Bay. As we look out to sea, two yachts are anchored in the bay, and the mountains of Mull frame the Passage of Tiree. As the day draw towards a close and the sun sinks in the west we catch the dying rays at Balephetrish.

Oh, praise the Lord,
all you servants of the Lord,
you who serve at night
in the house of the Lord.

Lift up holy hands in prayer,
and praise the Lord.
May the Lord,
who made heaven and earth,

bless you from Jerusalem.
Psalm 134
