Unlike some other Scottish islands, Tiree’s only links with the Mainland are the CalMac Ro-Ro Ferry to Oban, the twice weekly flights to Oban and the Loganair Service to Glasgow International Airport. Grateful as we are on the island for these ‘Lifeline Services’ the problem is that in the summer in months in particular, though not exclusively, these services are often fully booked. There are occasions when those seeking to fly to Glasgow for urgent medical treatment have had to cancel appointments. Likewise, when bookings have to be made at short notice, for example to attend a funeral, there has been no space for cars on the ferry or seats available on the plane. One day this week the plane was unable to carry the mail or newspapers and all of this has an impact on island life and businesses
With this situation in mind and with the Air Link PSO coming up for tender very shortly, the Community Council called an urgent meeting in An Talla to share our concerns with representatives from Transport Council and with the a representation from Argyll and Bute Council.
