A guid New Year tae ane an’ aw’

Looking back over the past year so much has happened on our island home. There certainly has never been a dull moment. There have been a few dreich days when sky and sea were leaden. There have been days and nights last winter when the rain was driven by gale force winds and the roof tiles sounded as if they were dancing. But there were other days when the sun shone hour after hour and the machair was ablaze with colour. Then there have been the amazing rainbows, sunrises and sunsets. And that is just the weather!

Here in Scotland 2014 was described as ‘A Year Like No Other’. What a momentous year it proved to be with the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup, the MTV Awards, the Sports Personality of the Year and the Referendum. Yet it also included occasions of national as well as indivdual sadness and grieving.

How will 2015 be described? The truth is the media and the pundits may speculate but God alone knows. In the Bible, the Writer of the Book of Lamentations testifies, The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: ‘The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.’ No matter what 2015 may hold, be it joy or sadness, God can be completely trusted. He loves us so much he gave us his Son, whose birth has just been celebrated.
