CalMac have announced that due to ongoing swell conditions the 15:15 sailing from Castlebay to Oban will be delayed. The consequence of this decision is that this evening’s sailing from Tiree to Coll and Oban has been cancelled. With the change to the Winter timetable from Monday 26th October, last Thursday’s sailing from Oban to Coll, Tiree, Castlebay (Barra) and return was the last sailing through the Gunna Sound.
As the proposed timetable for Summer 2016 stands at present this would be the last regular sailing between the Isle of Tiree and the Outer Hebrides. It would also mean that it would rule out any day excursion to the island and would make impossible for Coll residents to shop on Tiree. The “Experience Tiree” introduction to the island run in conjunction with Kennedy’s Coaches would also sadly have to come to an end.

Do these photographs mark the end of an era, the sunset on the Tiree-Barra sailing?
Let’s hope not! After all it was a day trip that introduced us to Tiree.
The Barra sailing, with the possibility of a day trip,
also provides valuable income to local businesses, helping keep this island alive.
