It started with Abigail (A Big Gale) and was quickly followed by a succession of other more powerful storms. Storms Frank, Gertrude and Henry left many on the Mainland without power and shut roads and railway lines. In fact the West Coast Railway Line remains closed in Scotland due to the storm damage wrought upon the Lamington Viaduct. The ferry service to Tiree was cancelled on a number of occasions as was the island’s link with Glasgow International Airport. Yet, this week has been like ‘Summer in Winter’. We have had day after day of sunshine and it looks set to continue for at least another day or two. Some days have been so calm. However, out of the sun there has been a distinct chill in the air.
There have been clear views to near and distant islands.

Summer in Winter
Frost, a rarity on Tiree, has spread its ice fingers.
Winter lochens have been turned over night into skating rinks.
A clear reminder that blue sky does not transform winter into summer.
