Calm! All is Bright!
It’s Friday and another calm day.
Hardly a breath of wind, hardly a ripple on the sea.

In spite of the brightness there is an early morning haze.
It is as if the colour has been drained out of sea and sky.
Nevertheless there are still reflections.

Some of the ‘Home Comers’ are departing early.
For some the ferry is the first leg of a long journey.
As goodbyes are said the morning plane passes low overhead.
Somehow even the twin otter’s engines are muted this morning.

A gull too is in the air.
His flight hardly breaks the stillness.
It is as if our feathered friend is frozen in the still air.

Vehicles are offloaded and loaded.
Foot passengers descend and ascend the gangway.
The ferry sits quietly awaiting the time for her departure.

The lanes for boarding are empty.
Pier road is clear of traffic
The pier office sits still.

This is ‘still life on Tiree’.
