Wait! Wait! Wait!

There’s been a joke doing the rounds on Tiree.
They should have had ‘Wet, Wet, Wet’ playing at TMF.
It has been a weekend of persistent dreich, damp weather.

On Sunday evening sea fog (haar) began and settled in overnight.
The first ferry departed Oban at 5:30am and arrived Tiree at 9:20am.
Long before the ferry arrived the queues were snaking up the pier approach.
It was to be more than “Wet! Wet! Wet! — It was going to be “Wait! Wait! Wait!

On Tiree we have the Cobbled Cow Cafe/Restaurant famous for its carvery.
The ‘Cobbled Cafe’ van was down at the Ferry Terminal.
People were queueing up to be served.
Surely, worth the wait.

Although the Clansman has capacity for 600 passengers
it was obvious there was going to be a long wait for many
as not everyone would get on board.

Suddenly the MV Clansman appeared out of the mist.
One minute there was no sign of its imminent arrival.
The next it was coming alongside the pier.

The wait continued as the vehicles and passengers came ashore.
It was an exacting exercise marshalling the whole process of boarding.
Due to the sheer volume of traffic the ferry departed for Oban 45 minutes late.

Maritime Law is strict about the number of passengers allowed on board.
Cars, camper-vans, commercial vehicles and coaches all had to be boarded.
Some foot passengers went on via the car deck and later others by the gangway.

There was a long queue of disappointed festival goers.
The next (additional) sailing would not be until after 5:00pm.
With a dedicated vessel now, the ferry will have to return from Oban.
In previous years two ferries would arrive at the pier – one just after the other.

This evening the whole process will take place again.
The queues will begin to form and snake down towards the pier.
With the delay in sailing this morning it will have a knock on effect.
Undoubtedly the ferry will be later than advertised.

Let’s hope there is space for all planning on sailing this evening.
It is an even longer wait for the ferry tomorrow.
It is a 19:05 departure from Tiree.

It's going to be a long day.
It’s going to be a long day

Wait! Wait! Wait!
It’s a long wait at the airport.
Three planes are scheduled for today.
Already, because of the fog, the first is cancelled.
It could be a long wait for those hoping to fly today.
And a long wait for our mail!
