Skilful. Welcoming. Industrious.
Three words that represent a SWI event on Tiree.
The event was the Annual Show held this year in An Talla, Crossapol.
SWI stands for the Scottish Women’s Institute.
Tiree is a member of the Mull and Tiree Federation.
There is one institute on the Isle of Tiree and several on Mull.
On the Isle of Mull there is Fionnphort, Salen,Tobermory and Torosay.
Institutes meet monthly from September to May.
There are talks and demonstrations on a multitude of subjects.
I am assured by members that the variety on offer is almost endless.
Art, Aerobics, Cooking, Computing, Travel, Traditions, Weaving, Wildlife and More.
Examples from the Children’s Class
Visitors to the monthly meetings are always made very welcome.
It is an opportunity to experience friendship and fun.
And it is a chance to get to know your neighbours.
This year Tiree welcomed various members from Mull.
The large hall in An Talla was a colourful scene.
The various tables represented hours of work.
On display was both skill and industry.
The morning was taken up with judging.
The afternoon for most was free time.
Lunch and dinner was held in the small hall.
The evening was open to anyone to view the work.
And to the end the day various cups and bowls were awarded.
The judges were:
Produce: Catherine Smith from Mid-Argyll
Handcrafts: Roger Pendlebury from Dervaig, Isle of Mull
Flowers: Eileen Tainsh from Tiree
Photography: Alan Millar from Tiree
